Yellow Color Extraction from Saffron Stamens

Yellow Color Extraction from Saffron Stamens

Saffron – known as the “golden spice” – is one of the world's most precious natural products. Apart from its culinary and medicinal uses, saffron has attracted immense attention in the natural dye and cosmetic industries for its vibrant yellow color. The color comes primarily from crocin, a water-soluble carotenoid compound found in the stamens and stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower.

Process of extracting yellow color from saffron stamens
  • Storage and drying : Fresh saffron flowers are collected, and the stamens are carefully separated from the petals and stigma. These stamens are dried at controlled temperatures (below 45°C) to preserve the active pigment compounds.
  • Pulverization The dried stamens are ground into a fine powder to increase the surface area for extraction. Uniform powder ensures better pigment yield during solvent extraction.
  • Solvent Extraction Powdered saffron stamens are treated with polar solvents such as ethanol or methanol to solubilize crocin and related carotenoids. This step can also use aqueous or hydro-ethanolic solutions for food-grade pigment extraction.
  • Filtration and Concentration The extract is filtered to remove solid impurities, then concentrated using a rotary evaporator or mild heating to obtain a thick yellow solution rich in crocin.
  • Drying and Storage The final extract can be freeze dried or spray dried to produce a fine yellow powder. This powder retains its color strength and stability for long term industrial use.
Applications of Saffron Yellow Pigment
  • Textile Industry : Natural textile manufacturers use saffron pigment as a plant-based dye for silk, wool, and cotton. It gives a brilliant golden-yellow color to clothes without synthetic chemicals.
  • Food and beverages : As a natural food color, saffron color enhances the visual appeal of desserts, dairy products and beverages. Its antioxidant properties add color as well as nutritional benefits.
  • Cosmetics and skin care : Saffron extract is widely used in natural cosmetics such as face masks, creams and soaps for its skin brightening and anti-inflammatory effects. Yellow color also gives a bright look to beauty products.
  • Pharmaceutical Formulation Rich in crocin, saffron extract supports neurological, antioxidant and mood-enhancing benefits, making it a valuable ingredient in health supplements and therapeutic products.

Purification & Stabilization
  • The extract undergoes microfiltration to remove unwanted residues.
  • Stabilizers like ascorbic acid or natural antioxidants may be added to prevent degradation.
  • The pigment is further concentrated via freeze-drying or spray-drying into powder form.

Applications
  • Food Industry: Used in beverages, dairy, and confectionery as a natural yellow food colorant.
  • Textile Dyeing: Produces bright yellow to golden hues, depending on mordants.
  • Cosmetics: Used in skincare and makeup formulations for its natural coloring properties.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Incorporated into herbal medicines for its antioxidant benefits.
