Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Extract
Common Forms: Powder, oleoresin, essential oil, aqueous or ethanol extract, curcumin concentrate
Extraction Process
- Harvesting & Cleaning: Mature turmeric rhizomes are harvested, thoroughly washed to remove dirt, and sliced into small pieces.
- Drying : Sliced turmeric is sun-dried or dried using hot air to reduce moisture content while retaining active compounds.
- Grinding : Dried turmeric is ground into a coarse or fine powder to increase surface area for efficient extraction.
- Solvent Extraction: The powder is subjected to solvent extraction using ethanol, methanol, or acetone to extract curcuminoids.
- Filtration & Concentration: The solvent-extract mixture is filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain a thick paste or oleoresin.
- Separation & Purification : Curcumin (yellow pigment and main bioactive) is separated using chromatographic or crystallization techniques for high-purity curcumin extracts.
- Drying (Optional) : The final extract can be spray-dried or freeze-dried to obtain turmeric extract in powdered form.
